The Art Of Power Sleep
by Kacper M. Postawski, www.PowerfulSleep.com
Many people are becoming
more familiar with the term power sleep. Power sleep is a science
of sleep that enables people to sleep less than the often-recommended
8 hours of sleep without compromising mental sharpness, alertness
and energy.
The key to power sleep is
to get your internal sleep clock synchronized with your circadian
rhythm and body temperature. These factors play a vital role in
how you feel throughout the day. Your internal clock should tell
you when you are becoming sleepy, when to rise in the morning and
what time of day your body needs to be at an optimal energy level.
Anything from erratic sleep patterns to jet lag to working odd shift
hours can easily desynchronize these natural rhythms.
Establishing a regular nightly
bedtime and morning wake up time can reprogram these rhythms. Gradually
our body will figure out what our sleep pattern is and exactly how
much sleep is enough. People that practice power sleep will likely
sleep about five to seven hours a night and seldom sleep in or feel
a need to over sleep. Some may take a siesta mid-day with a short
power nap, ten to twenty minutes at the most, to revitalize their
energy level. Melatonin may sometimes be used for its role in aiding
your natural circadian rhythm. What power sleep does is optimize
sleep.
People that over sleep tend
to spend too much time in bed and never achieve deep sleep. They
will awaken several times a night, perhaps for bathroom breaks,
or just restless tossing and turning. There is difficulty getting
up in the morning and they never truly feel rested throughout the
day. Power sleep shortens the amount of time you spend in bed. You
go to bed when your body tells you that it can no longer function
awake. You aren't forcing yourself to go to sleep or struggling
to wind down and relax. You fall asleep
with ease once your head hits the pillow and you stay asleep throughout
the night. If you properly adjust your internal clock it may actually
signal to your body when to awaken each morning and your day immediately
begins full of energy.
Power sleep can add a few
more waking hours to your day, which will help with productivity.
Recent studies have also suggested that people that sleep 5 to 7
hours each night tend to have a longer life span than those who
sleep too much.
