Too Much Of A Good Thing... How Much Sleep Is Too Much?
by Kacper M. Postawski, www.PowerfulSleep.com
It seems like every time
we turn on the television or pick up a newspaper there are contradictory
conclusions on how much sleep is too much. One study may promote
the traditional standard 8 hours of sleep while warning about the
dangers of sleeping less than that common recommendation. Another
study will suggest that 8 hours of sleep is indeed too much sleep
and we are actually doing our body more harm than good by sleeping
too much.
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommends
nine hours of sleep each night, however, studies in 2002 from the
University of California, San Diego suggested that individuals with
an average each night of six to seven hours of sleep tend to have
a longer life expectancy. This study wasn't necessarily targeted
towards determining how much sleep is too much but the results strongly
suggest that too much sleep often makes it difficult for people
to fall asleep or achieve true deep sleep. There is a chance that
people are over sleeping because the quality of their sleep isn't
very good.
So exactly how much sleep is too much? Sleep
needs truly differ from one individual to the next. It is suggested
that sleeping more than the NSA recommended nine hours is indicative
of some sort of physical or emotional issue. Over sleep is often
a warning sign in a diagnosis of depression or other health complications.
There is also a fear that people pushing themselves
to go to bed at a certain time each night, whether their body is
tired or not, are unintentionally creating sleep disorders or even
a dependency on sleeping pills. Sleeping pills or over the counter
medications with sedative qualities are often misused and typically
promote over sleeping. Few of us even bother to think about how
much sleep is too much. Sleep is one of those things that people
can obsess over. Many of us lay down each night with the tasks or
challenges of tomorrow weighing on our mind. We all want a restful
night of sleep so we are focused and prepared. The thought of facing
the next day tired and sluggish due to fatigue isn't very appealing.
We don't think about how much sleep is too much because we are trained
that more sleep means we are more rested with more energy to take
that proverbial "bull by the horns" and seize the day.
We are told very little about problems that may arise from an obsession
with sleep and a fixation on getting as much sleep as possible.
Definitely something to think about when asking yourself how much
sleep is too much.
